Biography

Grzegorz Sumara studied biology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. In 2002 he began his scientific career with Prof. Erwin F. Wagner at the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), Vienna, Austria. In 2003, Dr. Sumara at the University Hospital Zurich, where he conducted research in the laboratory of Prof. Thomas F. Lüscher. At the end of 2004 he started his PhD with Prof. Romeo Ricci at the ETH Zurich. After completing his doctoral thesis, he went to Columbia University, New York, USA, where he worked in the research group of Prof. Gerard Karsenty. Zurzeit leitet Dr. Sumara eine eigene Forschungsgruppe am Rudolf Virchow Zentrum (RVZ) der Universität Würzburg in Deutschland, die durch das Emmy Noether Programm der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft und dem ERC Starting Grant unterstützt wird. Seine Forschungsarbeit konzentriert sich auf die Identifikation neuer Signalkaskaden, die Stoffwechselkrankheiten, wie Adipositas, Diabetes und Arteriosklerose, begünstigen. Grzegorz Sumara ist Autor einer Reihe von wichtigen und viel beachteten wissenschaftlichen Publikationen, die in renommierten Fachzeitschriften wie Science, Cell, Cell Metabolism, Cell Stem Cell und dem Journal of Experimental Medicine erschienen sind.
