Dr. Jamal Kussaga

Biography

Dr. Jamal Bakari Kussaga is a lecturer at the Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sokoine University of Agriculture. He did his PhD in Applied Biological Science at Ghent University in Belgium. His PhD research was on ‘Status assessment and roadmap for improvement of food safety management systems in Africa: the case of Tanzania’. He assessed the performance of food safety management systems in fish and dairy processing companies in Tanzania. He did Master degree in Food Quality Management at Wageningen University in The Netherlands. He has published several papers in international peer reviewed journals and book chapters. He attended several national and international workshops/seminars. He was also a research fellow at the Product Design and Quality Group (Wageningen University, The Netherlands) and Department of Food Safety and Food Quality (Ghent University, Belgium) under the Pathogen Combat Project (an EU project). He was involved in the development of research tools and assessed the effectiveness of food safety management systems (FSMS) in several food processing companies across eight European countries. His research area of interest is food safety, quality management, food safety audit, and assessment of the effectiveness of FSMS/Quality management systems in the food industry.
