Biography

Dr. Aydin Sav was born in Ankara and schooled in TED Ankara College. Ankara. He graduated from Ege University as a medical doctor. He started working as a junior searcher in department of pathology, for the most part participating in animal experiments. After receiving his M.D. degree, he moved to Istanbul and was trained in Cerrahpasa School Medicine, Department of Pathology. He was entitled as a pathologist upon completing his thesis on clinical and pathological aspects of brain tumors. He worked in Ankara Numune Hospital, laboratory of pathology for five years in the years 1985-1989. After fulfilling the requirements offered by Marmara University, he spent 19 years in department of pathology as tenure in years 1989-2008. His mainstay in the university was his establishment of Institution of Neurological Sciences, and building a spectacular neuropathology laboratory which was named upon and dedicated to his teacher Prof. Dr. Talia Bali Aykan. In 2008, he joined to Acibadem University, supporting as a forerunner of this new system. Currently, he works as the director of neuropathology unit. Dr. Sav is mainly interested in neuropathology, namely brain tumors and pituitary neoplasms. He is a member of Neurooncology Research Laboratory where the main research fields are search for early precursors or markers of glial tumors using association studies; analysis of peritumoral normal appearing brain parenchyma for oncogenic changes; metabolic changes during the course of glial tumors; optimizing the extent of resection for low grade gliomas. Additionally, he is interested in pituitary neoplasms mainly impact of biomarkers as diagnostic tools; enigmatic role of pituitary stem cells; impact of molecular and genetic markers in embryogenesis of pituitary. He published many national and international papers, book chapters. He works as referee for several journals. He is a member of the Federation of Pathology Societies of Turkey, Euro-CNS and ASNO (Asian Society of Neurooncology) and founder of Neuropathology Working Group under Federation of Pathology Societies of Turkey. He presented scientific studies both nationally and internationally, organized several neuropathology courses. He invited several internationally recognized neuropathologists, i.e. Dr. Bernd Scheithauer, Dr. Herbert Budka, Dr. Francesco Scaravilli, Dr. Paul Ince, Dr. Hans Goebel, Dr. Ingmar Blumcke, Dr. Raj Kalaria, Dr. Kalman Kovacs, Eva Horvath, Fabio Rotondo and Dr. Luis Syro, Dr. George Kontogeorgos to national meetings.
