Biography

 Pediatric Neurosurgeon Chief, Department of Surgery PSA Director, Operating Room Dr. Bhatia is employed by Pediatric Specialists of America (PSA), the physician-led multispecialty group practice of Miami Children’s Health System. He is chief of the Department of Surgery and a pediatric neurosurgeon within the Department of Neurosurgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Bhatia is also the director of the Operating Room for PSA and a professor of clinical neurosurgery and pediatrics at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree in 1980 from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India. Dr. Bhatia completed residencies in neurosurgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India, and was on the faculty there until 1993. He also was a research associate at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Bhatia then completed his residency in neurosurgery at University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. He pursued additional training with fellowships in vascular and skull-base surgery and pediatric neurosurgery at Jackson Memorial Medical Center. His clinical interests include the management of intractable epilepsy, brain tumors, pediatric peripheral nerve injuries, including brachial plexus injuries, vascular malformations and spinal dysraphism; neuroendoscopy in the surgical management of hydrocephalus and intracranial arachnoid cysts; as well as congenital malformations of the central nervous system, such as spinal bifida. Dr. Bhatia has a research interest in a number of aspects related to intractable epilepsy in children. He has investigated the role of optical spectroscopy in the detection of brain tumors and epileptic tissue. Dr. Bhatia has published landmark papers in pediatric epilepsy surgery and endoscopic techniques in hydrocephalus and is a leader in the field. He remains involved in other clinical projects. Dr. Bhatia is double-board certified in both neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgery. He has authored or co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, written four book chapters, and presented at many international and national conferences. Dr. Bhatia is highly engaged in both teaching and research. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), American Epilepsy Society (AES), American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons (ASPN), International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN) and the Neurological Society of India (NSI). He is very active in the hospital’s administration and leads multiple efforts to improve quality of care across all surgical specialities. Since 2005, Dr. Bhatia has served on the board of directors of the Child Foundation Charity (CFC). He is an advocate for bringing world-class neurological care to children in developing nations and has participated since 2003 as a volunteer with Project Medishare and Haiti Healthy Kids on numerous humanitarian mission trips to Haiti to evaluate and operate on hydrocephalic children. Dr. Bhatia sees patients at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital main campus, Nicklaus Children’s Aventura Care Center and the Nicklaus Children’s Palm Beach Gardens Outpatient Center. He is fluent in English and Hindi. As the first pediatric Brain Institute in the country, the pediatric neuroscience experts at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital have established undisputed leadership in the field and accumulated decades of experience.
