Biography

Bernardo is Professor of Business History and Bank Management at Bangor University and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He read economics (at ITAM, Mexico and Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain), history (Oxford) and received a doctorate in business administration (Manchester Business School). He has been studying financial markets and institutions since 1988. He joined Bangor after appointments at Leicester, Open University and Queen´s Belfast. Bernardo was elected to the council of the Association of Business Historians, Outreach Committee of the Business History Conference, is a member of the ESRC Peer Review College, and member of the editorial boards of various traditional outlets (Business History, Journal of Management History, Economic History of Developing Regions, International Journal of Bank Marketing, Quest - Indian Journal of Management and Research, and Cuadernos Empresariales). Some signs of the impact of his research include his contribution on the cashless society to the Bloomberg blog and that he is consistently ranked within the top 5 percent of over 32,000 authors registered at RePEc (a digital library that carries information on 1,000 journals and 300,000 working papers). He averages over 1,000 files views and 300 paper downloads per month. He has delivered invited presentations in the USA (e.g. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City), Europe (e.g. Copenhagen Business School), the Middle East (e.g. Iranian Accounting Association) and Asia (e.g. Kobe University). More recently, he was Visiting Professor of Business Histoy at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona).

Research Interest

My intellectual contribution has been to demonstrate the long term nature of technological innovation (with the potential to modify competitive intensity and to articulate diversification strategies) in retail banking. Keywords: Depositary institutions (Savings banks, cajas, TSB, building societies), appropiation of computer technology, cash dispensers (ATM), comparative business history (UK, Spain, Mexico), accounting history.
