Biography
James is a Senior Lecturer in Research Methods and Social Entrepreneurship and Director (Training and Development) for the Ph.D. Studies programme at the University of Bradford School of Management. He is also a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Paris Ouest. Before coming to Bradford, James taught in the Physics and Mathematics School at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and was Director of their M.Sc. programmes in Statistics. He was also Director of the School’s Royal Statistical Society programmes, a member of the central management team and faculty quality assurance team as well as holding a variety of other School and central university administrative positions. James also delivered Executive Development courses throughout the UK. He studied at the Universities of East Anglia, Sheffield and Leeds (on a Science Research Council scholarship) and then in the Applied Statistics department of the University of Reading (also on an SRC scholarship) and at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences on a tailored programme in Operational Research. James worked at Marconi and then in the import-export business in the City of London (at Burns Phelp & Co., now part of Rank Group Limited) but most of his early career was spent working in corporate research as a mathematical modeller and in consultancy. He worked in British Gas’s corporate research laboratories (primarily on optimisation of gas scheduling of the UK’s national transmission system) in the capacity of Team Leader and also as an Internal Consultant, and then at the Central Electricity Generating Board (later Nuclear Electric) in the Systems Development group (nuclear reactor optimisation and the decommissioning of power stations) as well as undertaking internal consultancy. Additionally, he has undertaken consultancy and executive education for a variety of organisations, including the Land Registry Office (Northern Ireland), ARM/ Leyland DAF, British Salt, British Nuclear Fuels, the NHS, and the SME Knowledge Network at University of Bradford School of Management. At Bradford, James currently teaches Business Research Methods on the MBA programmes, and Introductory and Advanced Research Methods and Statistics on the Ph.D. and DBA programmes at Bradford and NARTI (the Northern Advanced Research Training Institute). He also provides a statistical advisory service within the School. Additionally, he is a member of the University’s Committee for Ethics in Research (CER). James is a member of various learned organizations: He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, Member of the Academy of Management (USA), the British Academy of Management (BAM), and the Human Development and Capabilities Association (HDCA (founded by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum).
Research Interest
James has undertaken research in the main areas of information and management, social enterprise and social regeneration, and business and society, applying his statistical and research methodology expertise to the exploration of these fields. He is a member of the research centre, Paris Research in Norms, Management and Law (PRIMAL), an international network of scholars coordinated by the University of Paris, where he is the lead academic for Research Methods. He is currently involved in two PRIMAL projects on mentoring. He also has on-going research collaborations with colleagues at Leibniz University, Hannover, Ludwig Maximillian University, Munich, Sindh University and the University of Murcia. He has published has research in a variety of top international journals and books in science, engineering, mathematics and management. His recent output includes articles in: Business History, European Journal of Marketing, International Journal of Public Sector Management, Information and Management, Journal of Business Ethics, and he regularly acts as a reviewer for journals including: European Journal of Marketing, International Journal of Production Management, Journal of Service Research, Journal of Organizational Change Management, Policy and Politics, and International Journal of Operations Management. He is also on the editorial board for the International Journal of Surgery and was a track chair at the EURAM 2012 Annual Conference. Additionally, he has acted as a grant application reviewer for the EPSRC, as well as paper reviewer for the Academy of Management and the British Academy of Management. He has received a best paper track award at the British Academy of Management (2007) and is the formal expert panel member for statistical support for an on-going ESRC funded research project on mentoring in European Trade Unions.
