Biography
Dr James Campbell is a Reader in Structural Integrity. A member of the Division of Mechanical Engineering and the Structural Integrity Theme he is based at the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) at Granta Park, near Cambridge. James obtained a B.Eng in Aeronautics from Imperial College London. He then moved to Cranfield University where he gained an MSc in Astronautics and Space Engineering, followed by a PhD on Lagrangian hydrocode modelling of hypervelocity impact on spacecraft. After two years as a post-doctoral research associate at Los Alamos National Laboratory he returned to Cranfield University in 2001 as a Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer. James joined Brunel University London in April 2015. James’ expertise is in the application of non-linear analysis to response of structures and materials. Understanding the response of structures to extreme loads, such as impact or crash, is critical for safe design in many engineering fields. His research interests cover fundamental development of numerical methods through understanding and modelling key physics, such as material behaviour, up to analysis and design of advanced structures.
Research Interest
Crash and impact response of structures, Modelling material behaviour under large deformation and high strain rate loading, Continuum damage mechanics, Fluid-structure impact, Aircraft ditching, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH).
