Ryo Sekine

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow
Ecology
Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (Institute of Freshwater Ecology)
United Kingdom

Biography

Ryo completed his Ph.D. in 2012 at the Centre for Biospectroscopy in the School of Chemistry, Monash University. His research focused on the fundamental characterisation of the vibrational structures of isoflavones, a class of polyphenols found in plants, studying their molecular structure and interactions with silver nanoparticles using Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) and computational chemistry (DFT methods).Following his Ph.D., Ryo joined the Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation (CERAR) as a postdoctoral research associate under an ARC Discovery Project on environmental nanotoxicology.

Research Interest

His focus was mainly on the long term, core transformations of silver nanomaterials, employing X-ray spectroscopies to elucidate the changes in core speciation along major release pathways of nanomaterials. He was also involved in developing a device capable of in situ screening of nanoparticle transformations in the environment: Nano in situ Deployment Devices, or nIDDs. In 2015 he commenced his Individual Fellowship under the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions program, hosted at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in the United Kingdom, investigating the surface interactions of nanomaterials (the eco-corona) and its implications for ecotoxicology.
