Biography
Professor Kevin Brindle heads a research group at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute(link is external). In collaboration with scientists at the University of Manchester, the team is developing techniques to diagnose and monitor cancer better, focussing on lung, brain, oesophageal and breast cancers. The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the more likely a patient’s treatment is to be successful. That’s why Professor Brindle is testing out novel combinations of imaging techniques with other lab tests to find new and effective ways to detect the disease earlier than is currently possible. And by working collaboratively, the group hopes to fast-track the development of these approaches into the clinic, so that they can benefit patients sooner. These same techniques may also help improve cancer treatment, because they could show whether a patient is responding to a particular type of therapy. This information can then be used to tailor treatments in individual patients, making cancer medicine more personal.
