Biography

"Louise is the Associate Head for Research, in the School of Art and Design at Coventry University. She has a background in psychology and human factors that has been applied predominantly to design for health. Her research is focused on the development of products, interventions and services to benefit health and wellbeing. She employs a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods as well as art and design approaches to ensure that new products, systems, services and interventions are functional as well as being desirable, usable and acceptable to users and stakeholders. Louise has been a Reader in User-Centred Health Design since 2012. She leads research that explores how art and design techniques can be applied in health and wellbeing contexts. Research takes a wide variety of forms, from the artistic exploration of the effects of illness, through to data generation, prototyping, and co-creation methodologies resulting in pragmatic responses to health and wellbeing challenges. Louise graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BSc in Psychology and Sport Science in 1998, and with a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2002. Her PhD research focused on the design of simulated environments for training and evaluating surgical skills. This led to an EPSRC funded post at the University of Warwick to apply Human Factors to the development of a virtual reality training system for knee surgery. She then worked in Occupational Psychology consultancy for 2 years, before joining Coventry University in 2006. She has since held a range of different roles including Senior Lecturer in Product Design, Reader and Director of the Centre for Excellence in Product and Automotive Design (CEPAD)."
