Paula Mota

Biography

Paula Mota is a consultant cardiologist since 2006. She obtained her Masters as a Medical Doctor at the Classic University of Lisbon in 1989. She underwent Cardiology specialty training in Lisbon and gained further competencies in centres of excellence across Europe: in Oxford (1992), Oporto (1993), Leeds (1995), Aalst, Belgium (1995), Barcelona (2008) and Vienna (2009). In 2013, she took a consultant post at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Since March 2014, Dr Mota has been a Cardiology Consultant of the William Harvey Hospital, EKHUFT, and honorary consultant at St George’s Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London.

Research Interest

Her area of greatest expertise is ischaemic heart disease, both in the acute phase, like acute myocardial infarct, and chronic phase such as angina pectoris and heart failure. Since 2004, Dr Mota has dedicated herself to the percutaneous treatment (i.e. stenting) of coronary artery disease. Over the years, she has been addressing cases of increasing severity, namely calcified arteries and chronic total occlusions. She contributed to the introduction of rotational atherectomy, which selectively drills through calcified thickening of the arteries, at the William Harvey Hospital. This way, many of the patients that were previously sent to London, can now be safely and successfully treated in Kent.
