BSc Durham 1968, PhD Reading 1971, Chartered Geologist C Geol 1987. Lectureships at University of Sierra Leone 71-72, University of Wales at Cardiff 73-74, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne 75-82, and Durham University 83-87; then Senior Lecturer 87-89, Reader 89-93 and Professor 93- at Durham University, then Master University College Durham (50% Univ College, 50% Dept of Earth Sciences).
Research Interest
Carbonate sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology and diagenesis. Carbonate platforms of all ages and all parts of the world - more recently Europe, Middle East, China and Western Australia. Carbonate petroleum reservoirs, prediction of facies and porosity. Permian and Carboniferous strata of NE England, facies and cycles, and analogues of North Sea reservoirs. Quaternary carbonate sediments of the Red Sea (Egypt) and western Australia: facies and diagenesis of highstand reefal and grainy carbonates in the context of sea-level and climate changes. Sedimentology, stratigraphy, isotope + trace element geochemistry Millennial-scale cycles in carbonate successions: are beds cycles? Slope carbonates: depositional processes and cycles. Role of hyperpycnal flows. Dolomites and dolomitization: the role of bacteria Permo-Carboniferous basins in South America: carbonate-evaporite strata and hydrocarbon potential Late Precambrian carbonates from the Lesser Himalaya: depositon and diagenesis of Kroll oolites and original mineralogy of ooids.
