Besim Mustafa

Biography

Besim Mustafa is a Senior Lecturer in Computing and lectures in computer architectures, embedded systems, operating systems and computer networks. He served as the Computing degrees programme leader for four years and is currently the programme leader for “Control and Embedded Systems” undergraduate degree programme. Before joining Edge Hill University, he spent 30 years in computer industry as a software and hardware design, development and project engineer working for large international computer manufacturers. At ICL (International Computers Limited, now part of Fujitsu) he worked on the commissioning of ICL1900 series mainframes. Later he was responsible for the design validation of high performance ICL3900 series mainframes and for developing self-test and validation firmware for ICL’s “Massively Parallel Systems” project. After working on the development of object-oriented distributed systems management software for the parallel systems he moved onto developing ICL’s CORBA-based distributed systems middleware as a senior member of the commercial DAIS project which was initially developed at the University of Manchester. While working in ICL he served as an official IEE (now IET) mentor to many young graduate engineers who successfully went on becoming Chartered Engineers. At Unisys he worked on small systems hardware and software evaluation and was responsible for designing and developing the suite of test software used for systems commissioning and as part of manufacturing system burn-in process used in several Unisys manufacturing plants worldwide. He later was responsible for product assurance and evaluation of Unisys A5 mainframes and lectured on Burroughs mainframe architectures as part of training sessions for graduate engineers. Besim also worked for smaller software and electronics companies as a software designer and as a consultant. His wide-ranging industrial experience included such diverse areas as requirements engineering, design validation, parallel systems development, middleware design, embedded systems design and integrated enterprise applications support. Besim has been a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE, now IET) and a Chartered Engineer from 1985 to 2000.
