Biography

Biography Graham Weir has taught at the university since 2001. His areas of specialism include composition, performance techniques, music technology, quality enhancement and programme development. Prior to entering academia Graham had a high-profile career as a member of the internationally successful group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), touring, performing and broadcasting all over the world, playing guitar, keyboards, and horns. He co-composed a range of tracks for the band including one of their biggest hits Forever Live and Die, and received several platinum, gold, and silver discs. As a session horn player, Graham has recorded and appeared with artists as diverse as Van Morrison, Wet Wet Wet, Jack Bruce, Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain, Liberty X, Kate Rusby, Hue and Cry, The Mull Historical Society and the London Sinfonietta. Graham has served as adviser, validator and writer for Music education programmes at school, college and university levels in Great Britain, the United States, Hong Kong and Southern Africa. He works annually in Malawi, directing the education programme at Lake of Stars, one of the best-known global music festivals. Drawing on his experience in the events industry, Graham works closely with the university’s BA Festival and Events Management programme, initiating and coordinating events featuring artists such as Robert Plant, Graham Coxon, Karine Polwart and Bernard Butler. Graham holds an MMus with Distinction in Composition from Bath Spa University, a Licentiate Diploma in Performance from Trinity College of Music, London and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh.
