Biography
After obtaining a degree in Engineering Science Rachel Williams won a scholarship to study a Masters in California in Biomedical Engineering. She returned to the UK to study for a PhD at The University of Liverpool. A year after finishing her PhD she was appointed to a lectureship in Liverpool and started to develop her own group studying the interface between synthetic materials and the biological environment. Professor Williams said: I started to work with the ophthalmic surgeons and use my expertise to address better ways for them to use the materials that existed and research ways to modify materials to improve clinical outcomes. In 2010, she moved into the department of Eye and Vision Science and now leads the Ophthalmic Bioengineering research theme. Drawing on her cross-disciplinary collaborations in the University and clinical colleagues in St Paul’s Eye Unit in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the team are developing strategies to overcome vision loss.
