Biography

Since July 2016 I have been the CTO for the IBM UK Emerging Technology team, leading the technical direction of this highly agile and innovative team. Defining and delivering unusual and first-of-a-kind client focused projects, directing research activities, collaborating with UK and US universities and encouraging publication of our work as Open Source assets. Ensuring the team develop capabilities in numerous areas, including: Cloud, Cognitive Computing, Analytics and Big Data, Social Business, IoT, Mobile, Security and Business Innovation. I am an active industry researcher and a versatile technical specialist with a long history of high­-profile successful client­-facing project delivery. My experiences range from: Lead technical specialist and architect roles on large services engagements in the Telco, Transportation and Utilities sectors; Directing multi­disciplinary research teams from leading academic and industry partners as part of a series of $100M and $80M US/UK research programmes (NIS ITA and DAIS ITA); Delivery of numerous first­-of-­a-­kind experimental projects fusing research capabilities with current technologies for a variety of clients. Most recently I specialise in knowledge representation, semantics, language and cognitive systems and am actively researching in these fields as well as delivering experimental capabilities. I am also active in the IBM internal community, mentoring a number of colleagues, acting as a reviewer for our internal professional certification programme and patent process, and I previously created a Hursley technical community that integrates into the IBM Academy of Technology via a local affiliate.
