Martyn Keen

Biography

"Martyn began his career in mental health care in 1992 working with people with complex needs at West Park Hospital in Surrey, going on to complete his mental health nursing registration in 1997 at St Georges Hospital London. Martyn developed a career in his special interest area of adult community care starting in group led therapy work services and then on to a community mental health nursing role in Richmond. He developed a special interest in working with young people experiencing psychosis and their families and progressed to a clinical nurse specialist role in early intervention services in south London. Martyn contributed to his workplace becoming an early adopter site, one of the first services of its kind in the country, involved in informing Government policy on Early Intervention Service in the UK. Martyn was successful in achieving a BSc(Hons) in Psychosocial Interventions (PSI), leading on family work service development, dual diagnosis and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) with psychosis interventions for young people. In 2003 he took up the role of lecturer practitioner at St George's Hospital specialising in PSI education and course development. In 2007 Martyn moved into higher education full-time at Kingston and St Georges working on a wide range of mental health subjects across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as inter-professionally. In 2011 he accepted a development role in field leadership for the mental health undergraduate nursing programme as well as lead advisor across all nursing fields and the postgraduate programme. This role also includes being the lead for mental health nursing student support. In 2014 he successfully completed an MSc in Leadership examining group supervision practices for postgraduate nursing students. Martyn's leadership and management development was extended further in 2015 when he accepted the role of final year lead for the pre-registration curriculum, broadening his area of interests to include employability strategies for newly qualified nurses. Martyn's interests lie in innovation in clinical partnership teaching approaches and inter-professional working in health and social care settings. Experiential and simulated learning as well as improving the practice education experience for students are further areas of interest. Forwarding improvements in young people's mental health care and for adults with serious mental health issues in the community also remain key clinical objectives."
