Biography
I was appointed to a lectureship at Manchester in 1999, becoming a senior lecturer in 2002 and a professor in 2006. My work is mostly in aesthetics and metaphysics, and I'm the author of two monographs: An Identity Theory of Truth (Palgrave, 2000) and Works of Music: An Essay in Ontology (OUP, 2007). The main focus of my research at the moment is the idea of authentic musical performance, and I'm now starting the process of writing a book on this topic. In my spare time I'm Head of Discipline Area and Director of The Mind Association.
Research Interest
I work in metaphysics, the philosophy of language and aesthetics. I have a particular interest in truthmaker theory, the ontology of music and the philosophy of music generally. My recent work has been on topics including: pluralism about truth; truth's asymmetry; authenticity in musical performance; the ontology of jazz; musical profundity; and the metaontology of art. Links to my published books and papers are found on PhilPapers. When I'm not doing philosophy, I like listening to music (classical, jazz, and popular), riding my bike (a Colnago C50), and drinking wine. On a good day, I get to do all three.
