Biography
Karen Chalmers joined the School in September 2005 with a part time appointment as the Chair in Community Health Research. Her PhD preparation was at the University of Manchester and she has maintained a collaborative linkage with the School over many years. Her masters’ and baccalaureate degrees are from McMaster and McGill Universities in Canada. Most of Dr. Chalmers’ academic career was at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg Canada where she held the posts of Professor and Associate Dean Graduate Programs. She resides near Toronto Canada and visits the School during the academic year.
Research Interest
Dr. Chalmers’ research interests are in primary health care and health promotion in community populations including the chronically ill. She has conducted research with family members of women with breast cancer, child health home visiting programmes, smoking cessation and relapse prevention and other related topics. Recent research has focused on people and family members coping chronic respiratory disease and cancer.
