Roger Bryant

Biography

I am currently Professorial Fellow in the School of Mathematics having been Professor of Pure Mathematics at UMIST from 1994 to 2002. My research is in algebra. I studied as an undergraduate at Oriel College, Oxford, from 1963 to 1966. I stayed on at Oxford and obtained a DPhil in 1969. My supervisor was Dr M. B. Powell and my thesis concerned varieties of groups. From 1969 to 1972 I was Research Fellow in the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Australian National University at Canberra. I took up a lectureship in mathematics at UMIST, Manchester, in 1973. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1977 and to Reader in 1987. In 1994 I became Professor of Pure Mathematics. I served as Head of Department of Mathematics, UMIST, from 1995 to 1997. I was an Editorial Adviser to the London Mathematical Society from 2000 to 2005 and a member of the Peer Review College of the EPSRC from 2003 to 2005. I am the author of approximately 80 published papers on group theory and related topics and have spoken at many international conferences.
