Biography

I am a Consultant Nephrologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Professor of Practice (Medicine) for Imperial College London, and Director of Clinical Academic Training for Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre. I trained in Cambridge, London and Oxford interrupted by spells of skiing, ski-mountaineering and volcano climbing. I have a major clinical and research interests in immune mediated renal disease (vasculitis, SLE and other glomerulonephritides), HIV and kidney disease and chronic kidney disease, have written textbooks on dialysis and nephrology (including the Oxford Handbook of Dialysis now in its 4th edition, and Fast Facts in Nephrology), and on academic training, and am hugely committed to teaching and training. I teach nationally and internationally on aspects of kidney disease especially glomerular disease and HIV. I help manage the research programmes at Imperial College Kidney and Transplant Institute for glomerulonephritis and vasculitis, and the London renal-HIV consortium. At Imperial College I teach various aspects of clinical medicine in years 2 through 6 including renal medicine, general internal medicine, clinical skills, revision courses, physiology, service re-design and careers guidance. As director of the Clinical Academic Training Office (CATO: https://imperial.ac.uk/medicine/study/clinical-academic-training-office/) I support healthcare professionals from all clinical backgrounds enter and advance their academic careers into PhDs and beyond, working closely with the NIHR and other funders. I have been the Chair of the UK renal association education and training committee, a specialty advisor to the Royal College of Physicians (London), and was Director of Education and Quality for Health Education England (London). I continue to ski and ski-mountaineer, and cycle round London (and in fact everywhere), and am hoping my wife will become a best selling author (try “Fallen Order: intrigue, heresy and scandal in the Rome of Galileo and Caravaggio”, and also “Letter in a Bottle” – un-put-downable), and help Abundance London (http://www.abundancelondon.com) harvest seasonal fruit.
