Kirsten Barnicot

Biography

I am a Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health, with a background in academic psychology and social psychiatry. My area of special interest is the prevention and treatment of inter-generationally transmitted psychopathology, with a particular focus on personality disorder and on psychological interventions in the perinatal period. I held an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship during my PhD research at Queen Mary University of London, which focused on treatment processes in dialectical behaviour therapy for personality disorder. Currently I hold an NIHR Postdoctoral Research Fellowship evaluating the interplay between post-traumatic stress disorder and personality disorder, and the implications of this comorbidity for psychological treatment. Additionally, I am working on the ACORN trial of a psychological intervention for antenatal anxiety, in the course of which I am evaluating the impact of maternal antenatal anxiety on child development, stress responsivity and epigenetics. Further work in development includes an evaluation of a video feedback parent-infant intervention for parents with personality disorder. I very much enjoy contributing to teaching, including lecturing and supervision of undergraduate students and trainee psychiatrists at Imperial College London and University College London.
