Biography
Dr. Latha Ramakrishnan is a Research Associate within the Vascular Biology Group at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. Dr. Ramakrishnan graduated in B.Sc (H) – Biochemistry from Delhi University and with M.Sc -Biotechnology from M.S. University of Baroda and further pursued a PG Diploma in Radiation-Biology in which she was ranked first and received the prestigious HOMI BHABHA AWARD. Following that, she accepted the role as Scientific Officer at the Nuclear Biotechnology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, Govt. of India. During this period (three and a half years), her work led to several peer-reviewed publications and awards of “Best Oral Presentation” and “Best Poster” at various national conferences. After relocation to the UK in 2003, Dr. Ramakrishnan joined the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research, UCL as a Senior Research Technician and worked for Prof. David Attwell and Prof. Michael Hausser. She contributed to three abstracts at the Society for Neuroscience (2005) and Proc. Physiological Society (2006). Dr. Ramakrishnan played a vital role in the acquisition and initiation of a BHF project grant, which she is currently working on; under the supervision of Dr. Greg Quinlan and Dr. John Wort. She is investigating “The role of Hepcidin/ Ferroportin axis in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension” and has presented her work as talks and posters at several national and international conferences. Dr. Ramakrishnan has contributed actively towards teaching in the Department of Medicine as well as NHLI. She undertakes several tutorials including contributing towards assessments. Dr. Ramakrishnan is heavily involved with the pastoral care and is personal tutor to several MBBS and MSc students. She has constantly updated her skills and benefitted from several professional development courses offered by EDU, LDC and PDC of Imperial College London.
