Marlene Rose

Biography

Marlene Rose is Professor of Transplant Immunology based on the Harefield site of NHLI. She is also a Consultant Clinical Scientists and Head of the Tissue Typing Laboratories at Harefield Hospital. Marlene obtained a BSc in Zoology from Hull University, an MSc in from Imperial College, London University and a PhD in Immunology at Edinburgh University. She was a post-doctoral research fellow at Glasgow University for three years and a senior scientist at the Chester Beatty Research Institute, London for 5 years before joining Harefield Hospital to Head-up the Immunology Department in1982. Marlene established a Tissue Typing Dept at Harefield Hospital and built up a research group to investigate immunological mechanisms of rejection. She has been involved in basic research into transplant rejection and monitoring the transplant patients since the very early days of the heart transplant programme at Harefield Hospital. After the merger of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School with Imperial College, Marlene was made a Reader in Transplant Immunology (co-terminus with the Harefield appointment) and a Professor of Transplant Immunology in 2000. Marlene’s career at Harefied/Imperial has consisted of a mixture of fundamental and translational research into the immunology of transplant rejection. Her work has been funded by four programme grants from the British Heart Foundation as well as other sources of funding. She has published over 100 papers in peer review journals including highly cited papers in high impact factor journals such as Nature and Lancet. She has published about 50 chapters/reviews/commentaries/editorials. Many papers have been about the role of endothelial cells in transplant rejection. In recent year her work has focussed on the role of autoimmunity, cytoprotective proteins, and antibodies. Marlene has supervised 16 PhD students and 3 MD students. In 2005 Marlene was part of an International Rask Force organised by the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation to establish guidelines for diagnosis of Antibody Mediated Rejection. In 2010 she was part of the International Task Force to revise these guidelines and recommendations.
