Biography
Professor Sheppard is honoury Professor of Cardiovascular Pathology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, and has worked there for 25 years. She is now head of the Cardiovascular Pathology Unit at St George’s Medical School which is a unique academic centre within UK funded by Charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). Professor Sheppard has built up an extensive network with her cardiological colleagues within Royal Brompton hospital and St Georges Hospital. She collaborates on imaging with MRI unit of Royal Brompton Hospital and BRU Cardiovascular Unit within Imperial with an emphasis on cardiac genetics with Professor Stuart Cook. Prof Sheppard can be contacted at m.sheppard@sgul.ac.uk She is an expert cardiovascular pathologist and has established a unique international cardiac referral centre to investigate sudden young cardiac deaths. She has established a national database on sudden cardiac death with the Coroner’s Society based at St Georges medical School. She qualified in medicine from University College Cork in Ireland. Professor Sheppard won a Wellcome fellowship and completed her research MD at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London. She completed specialist training in Histopathology at University College Hospital London. She was appointed as a specialist cardiothoracic pathologist at Royal Brompton Hospital in London and was trained in cardiac pathology by Professor Michal Davies and in cardiac anatomy by Professor Robert Anderson. She did post graduate studies with a Fogarthy postgraduate Fellowship to NIH Washington DC and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington DC. Since her appointment at St George’s, she has established her working laboratory with technical, medical and administrative staff. She lectures both nationally and internationally on cardiac pathology. She has been appointed as national trainer in cardiovascular pathology for forensic and general pathology trainees in UK.
