Biography
Elaine works exclusively in the Student Law Office as a supervisor. She is Deputy Module Leader and the Solicitor Tutor responsible for the Business & Commercial Law Clinic. Under Elaine’s supervision, students deliver free legal advice to local businesses. During the past 6 years, Elaine’s students have advised businesses on trade mark registrations, intellectual property disputes, website & privacy issues, commercial contracts, terms and conditions, company incorporation, charitable status, consumer rights and corporate governance. Together with her colleague, Victoria Gleason, Elaine set up and supports a Student-Led Blog (https://wetakecareofbusiness.wordpress.com/) which offers information of interest to businesses and students. Elaine and Victoria were recently announced as finalists in the Routledge/ALT Teaching Law with Technology Prize 2016 for this innovative project. Elaine is a member of Northumbria’s Legal Education & Professional Skills research group (LEAPs). Her research focusses on clinical legal education, in particular the role of the supervisor and the rise of business law clinics in the UK. She is a regular reviewer for the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education. Elaine is currently undertaking a Professional Doctorate. Her thesis will explore her lived experience as a clinic supervisor through an autoethnographic lens. She regularly blogs about academic writing and publishing. Her blog (https://alawuntoherself.com) was shortlisted in the Education category of the 2016 UK Blog Awards. Elaine is also the organiser of PubhD Newcastle (https://pubhdnewcastle.wordpress.com), an initiative designed to bring together the North East PhD community to learn about each other’s research in a relaxed environment.
