Biography

Jamie Steane is Head of Visual Communication and Interactive Media Design. Jamie SteaneAs Head of VCIMD, I am responsible for the strategic development and management of multidisciplinary group of staff and courses including Graphic Design, Interactive Media Design and Motion Graphics & Animation Design at degree and postgraduate levels. My personal and professional interests lie at the intersection of design, business and technology. Looking back, my career highlights have always drawn on a combination of the three e.g. the design of video on demand service, a dotcom concept or an innovative blended learning initiative. My professional practice has largely involved the creation of new interactive products and services for a wider variety of clients from the film and music industries through to banks and education. Starting off at Philips, in the early nineties, gave me a great opportunity to work creatively with software developers to exploit the potential of state of the art. The pioneering bug continued as I left to work with music companies such as Sony, EMI and the Ministry of Sound on new forms of consumer product that involved interaction and digital technologies. After a couple of years brainstorming new consumer products, I moved to Time-Warner to manage the design, implementation and service of in-flight interactive audio & video on-demand entertainment systems for Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific. In partnership with British Telecom and Matsushita, these innovative new services were example precursors to the interactive television services we enjoy today. On completion of these projects, I went on to help set up a new media agency for one of Dublin’s most prestigious creatively led production companies Windmill Lane Pictures. Creatively leading a team of 27 designers, developers and project managers we worked on new media and multi-disciplinary design projects for a variety of clients including U2, Bank of Ireland, European Union and Credit Swisse. It was in this latter role that I started to work on educational initiatives for national and international clients that led to eventually my permanent move into design education.

Research Interest
