Research Interest
My research interests lie in the transition to the digital in records management, exemplified by the AC+erm (Accelerating positive change in e-records management) project. This 3-year international study highlighted the centrality of people issues and led to a re-conceptualisation of the ERM challenge and the development of a strategic framework for addressing it (McLeod & Childs, 2013; Childs & McLeod, 2013). We have applied some of the findings, in particular the people-focused proportionate, risk-based approach, in research data management projects in collaboration with the Digital Curation Centre and Digital Preservation Coalition. I am currently working with colleagues (Prof Moss and Prof Nicholas) to understand user behaviour in the cultural heritage world through the analysis of usage data. My primary teaching responsibility is information and records management. I have developed innovative work-based and distance learning training and education programmes for organisations such as the BBC, The National Archives, the European Central Bank and TNT, and have worked with others to develop and deliver work-based learning for a large financial group. I am Programme Leader for the PG Diploma/MSc Information & Records Management and BSc (Hons) Information & Records Management programmes, the first distance learning programmes of their type in the UK.
