Biography
Prof Karen McKenzie is a chartered clinical psychologists who has worked in the intellectual disability specialty, both within the NHS and voluntary sector, for many years. Prof Karen McKenzie is a chartered clinical psychologists who has worked in the intellectual disability specialty, both within the NHS and voluntary sector, for many years. She joined Northumbria as Professor of Psychology in 2014 after working for a number of years at the University of Edinburgh. She co-developed the ‘Learning Disability Screening Questionnaire’ and ‘Child and Adolescent Intellectual Disability Screening Questionnaire’ both of which are used nationally and internationally in clinical and forensic settings.
Research Interest
Karen is best known for her work in relation to screening for intellectual disability in adults and children. Her research interests are wide-ranging, relating to the health and psychological wellbeing in people with neurodevelopmental disorders. She has also conducted educational research and is interested in the impact of staff education on knowledge, skills, confidence and practice, as well as the way that education (particularly elearning) impacts on identity.
