Biography

Ruth leads the provision of the Business School’s coaching programmes and works on many client-based leadership programmes as well as teaching on the MBA and the MSc in Leadership and Management Ruth is an experienced leadership development specialist with over 20 years’ experience working at senior level as a learning and development practitioner in the private and public sector before joining Newcastle Business School in 2007. Ruth has a particular interest in enabling leaders to improve their effectiveness through enhancing their self-awareness and by engaging in personal and professional development. Ruth is part of the Corporate and Executive Development team in the Business School, developing bespoke learning interventions for client organisations and working as an executive coach with leaders from across a range of sectors. Ruth has a BSc from Sheffield Hallam University and an MPhil by Research from the University of Surrey, is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a Fellow of the HEA, and a member of the Association for Coaching. Ruth’s research focuses on work based learning and development; particularly the promotion of reflective practice in managers and methods of evaluating the impact of learning and development on the individual and the organisation..

Research Interest

Researching the impact of work based learning and development programmes and interventions such as coaching on the individual and the organisation. Three major studies to date: 2012/13: A study of the impact on 24 managers and the organisation (a regional transport authority) engaged in a three-year MA in Applied Management at NBS. A qualitative study examining a manager’s engagement in reflective practice, with pre-programme and post programme measures of managerial effectiveness. 2014/16 (on-going) : An examination of the development of responsible leadership behaviours in two cohorts of graduate managers from a large multi-national organisation completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Leadership at NBS 2014/16 (on-going): examining the impact of a coach development process on the alumni from over 10 cohorts of coaching students.
