Christopher Baker-beall

Biography

Christopher Baker-Beall is a Lecturer in International Relations. He contributes to teaching on the BA (Hons) in International Relations and the MA in International Relations - teaching modules at various Levels. Christopher is the module leader for the first year module Foundations and Challenges to International Relations, the second year module Understanding Foreign Policy and the third year module Critical Security Studies, all at the City Campus. He also lectures on the first year module Foundations and Challenges to Politics and International Relations at the Clifton Campus, the third year module States, National and Identity and the MA level module International Relations Theory, both at the City Campus. Christopher has held teaching roles at various academic institutions, including: Nottingham Trent University (2006-2010) Loughborough University (2011-2013) University of Leicester (2012-2013) University of Birmingham (2012-2013) Christopher has a BA (Hons) degree in International Relations and European Studies (Nottingham Trent University, 2004), an MA in International Relations Theory (Nottingham Trent University, 2008) and a PhD in International Relations (Loughborough University, 2011). Christopher has taught in higher education for over 10 years and is member of a number of international academic associations including the International Studies Association (ISA), the British International Studies Association (BISA) and the Academic Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES).

Research Interest

Dr Baker-Beall’s research interests can be divided into three areas: (1) interpretive approaches to International Relations; (2) the internal and external security policies of the European Union; (3) critical approaches to the study of security, with a particular focus on terrorism and counter-terrorism policy. His published research includes work on the following areas: The European Union’s Counter-Terrorism Response EU Internal Security Policies Radicalisation and Counter-Radicalisation Critical Studies on Terrorism Discourse Analysis Christopher is currently working on a number of articles and book chapters for publication. First, an analysis of the relationship between counter-terrorism and migration control policy at the EU level. Second, an analysis of the phenomena of ‘returning foreign fighters’ with a specific focus on the EU’s response. Third, an analysis of research conducted over the past 10 years in the field of Critical Terrorism Studies. Dr Baker-Beall is happy to supervise students in any area of International Relations theory (especially critical or interpretive approaches to IR, including discourse analysis), as well as research students interested in EU security policy, terrorism and counter-terrorism and radicalisation and counter-radicalisation.
