Biography
Anne Mason was born in Lincolnshire and studied at the Royal Academy of Music and The National Opera Studio. She made her operatic debut with Opera North singing Fenena Nabucco and has subsequently sung with the Royal Opera, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, Kent Opera, English Touring Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Opera Holland Park, Chelsea Opera Group, Teatro Real Madrid, Liceu Barcelona, Netherlands Opera, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Innsbruck Early Music Festival, Dresden Semperoper, Opera de Lille, Orleans Opera, Angers-Nantes Opera and De Vlaamse Opera. Anne also has a wide concert repertoire and has sung with LSO, Halle Orchestra, LPO, RPO and English Chamber Orchestra, and with conductors such as Nicholas McGegan, Sir Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink, Sir Roger Norrington and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Anne's repertoire includes Suzuki Madama Butterfly, Annina Der Rosenkavalier, Enrichetta I Puritani, Gertrude/Witch Hansel und Gretel, Guinevere Gawain and the Green Knight, Dorabella Cost fan Tutte, Marcellina Le Nozze di Figaro, Fenena Nabucco, Adalgisa Norma, Mother Hansel und Gretel, title role and Cornelia Giulio Cesare, Fricka Die Walkure, Kostelnicka Jenufa, Kabanicha Kat'a Kabanova, Azucena Il Trovatore, Minsk Woman Flight, title role Maria Stuarda, Agnes Beatrice di Tenda and Fricka and The Duchess of York in the world premiere of Giorgio Battistelli's Richard III. Anne's recordings include Marcellina (Haitink/EMI), Candida Emilia di Liverpool and Ismene in Simon Mayr's Medea (Opera Rara) and Azucena Il Trovatore (Parry/Chandos). On DVD she appeared as Helen King Priam for Kent Opera and in Channel 4's Death of a Princess written by Jonathan Dove. She also sang in the world premiere of All Our Future Days, a song cycle by Jonathan Dove which was composed especially for her. Recent engagements include Kostelnicka Jenufa (GTO), Mrs Alexander Satyagraha(ENO) and Genevieve Pelleas et Melisande (Opera Holland Park), Baba the Turk The Rake’s Progress (Opera de Lille), Annina La Traviata (Opera de Dijon and Theatre de Caen), Larina Eugene Onegin (Opera Holland Park), Jezibaba Rusalka (Glyndebourne on Tour), Marcellina Le Nozze di Figaro (Glyndebourne Festival), and Mrs Grose Turn of the Screw vfor Glyndebourne Touring Opera. Recent engagements included Mrs Noah Noyes Fludde in Amiens and Azucena in Il Trovatore for Scottish Opera. Anne has been teaching privately for 15 years and many of her pupils are enjoying careers at Royal Opera Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, English National Opera, English Touring Opera, Opera Holland Park and many companies abroad. She has examined for the Royal Academy of Music adjudicated for the Opera prizes at the Royal Academy and Les Azuriales Singing Competition. She has given masterclasses and has coached young artists at Glyndebourne and RWCMD.
