Research Interest
Manjeet Ramgora’s research focuses on a critical interpretation of republicanism in the thought of Cicero, Machiavelli and Montesquieu. She presents a conservative reading of republicanism that highlights the hierarchical structure of the public space, its institutions and political participation; these structures are further linked to the republic's ends of expansion and empire. As such, she criticises predominant egalitarian and participatory readings of republicanism. In addition, she is working on a project that examines Nehru's understanding of the republic in his pre-independence thought, writings and speeches and situates the egalitarian and participatory understanding of the republic in twentieth-century post-colonial thought.
