Research Interest

Steve's research investigates the environmental impact and performance of buildings in the context of climate change and low carbon, sustainable design. He has worked across a broad range of subject areas, including energy, thermal comfort, ventilation, daylight, noise, climate change and sustainable design. Steve has held over 20 EPSRC awards and has been the principal or co-investigator for several major multidisciplinary research consortia developed through EPSRC managed programmes, including VivaCity2020, a study of urban sustainability (£2.91 million); URSULA, a study of urban rivers and sustainability (£2.5 million), SCORCHIO, a study of the impact of climate change on the urban built environment (£500,000) and COPSE, a study of probabilistic climate change weather data for the built environment (£729,000). Steve has held three awards from EPSRC’s Sustainable Cities programmes, together with other funding from BRE, ETSU, DTI and industry.
