Biography

Dik is an Australian lecturer and researcher with over twenty years experience in architectural practice and professional film making. He is currently Assistant Professor heading a vertical Year 5/6 Design Studio and Module Convenor for the First Year subject People Buildings Landscape. He is Coordinator for the Design stream of the Architecture, Culture and Tectonics (ACT) research group, a member of the the Department Management Group and Chair of the Communications Committee. Prior to coming to Nottingham University he was Chief Representative for the China office of Melbourne architectural practice Studio505. Dik lived in Wujin, Jiangsu China with his wife and family and oversaw the construction of a number of significant cultural buildings and developed practice relationships around China. Previously Dik was a Director of Studio505 Melbourne (designer of the highest rated BREEAM, LEEDS and Greenstar office building in the world, Pixel in Melbourne) , has worked in Dubai, Holland and Japan (as lead on-site architect for the Australian Pavilion for World Expo 2005) as well as was a project architect for the $1 billion Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne (Bates Smart Architects). In addition to his architectural career, Dik is a multiple award winning film maker, and was Senior Animator on Academy Award winner Adam Elliot's feature film, " Mary and Max" which opened Sundance film festival in 2009. Dik's interest in both Architecture and film reside in making places that contribute meaningfully to the human story. Dik is involved in assisting international practice and education with his roles as President of the Royal Australian Institute of Architect's International Chapter, and is Vice President of the Commonwealth Association of Architects (Oceania Alt.).

Research Interest

Firstly having practiced architecture in the Middle East, Asia and Australia, and now teaching architecture in the UK he IS very interested in how the business of architecture is different in all these places. he also exploring how different cultures have an impact on the business of designing buildings and the pros and cons of globalisation. Secondly HE is continuing to explore life long interest in story telling and how the architect or designer can contribute to making meaningful places for things to happen. This includes on film, on stage, in virtual reality or just plane old reality.
