Biography

Fiona is a Professor of Evidence Based Health Care in the School of Health Sciences and Honorary Professor in the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology, School of Medicine. Fiona is also the Director of the Centre for Evidence Based Healthcare: a JBI Centre of Excellence. She trained originally as a biochemist and then undertook a PhD in Chemistry looking at solid phase peptide synthesis and peptide structure elucidation using FAB mass spectrometry. Around 1995 she became involved in systematic reviewing with the Cochrane Stroke Group and later with the Cochrane Skin Group. She has authored more than 30 systematic reviews, many of which are Cochrane reviews. For the last 16 years her main research interest has been risk factors, treatment and prevention of keratinocyte carcinoma, the most common cancer in humans. She is particularly interested in the needs and experiences and knowledge of skin cancer patients. Her systematic reviews have informed guidelines and policy, and have identified and informed the design of primary research, including randomised controlled trials, case control studies, cohort studies and mixed methods studies. Fiona also has an interest in using a linked database (The Health Improvement Network database (THIN), and the British Geological Survey (BGS) baseline geochemical dataset to look at the association between the risk of developing a BCC and arsenic concentrations. Fiona teaches evidence based practice and systematic reviewing to undergraduates, postgraduates and post registration students and works closely with clinical colleagues to ensure evidence implementation.
