Biography

Krish Ragunath is Professor of GI Endoscopy, Head of Endoscopy Service and Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Nottingham University Hospitals. He is the BSG International Secretary, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and London. He is member of the BSG, ASGE, ESGE and conferred honorary member of the South African GI Society. He is advisor for NICE interventional procedures in endoscopy, sits in the BSG Endoscopy and Oesophageal committees, steering group member of teh BSG Endoscopy research network. Professor Ragunath is an active member of the International Working Group on Classification of Oesophagitis (IWGCO) and Barrett's Oesophagus. His clinical and research interests include advanced endoscopic imaging of the GI Tract, in particular Barrett's oesophagus and minimally invasive endoscopic therapy of early GI neoplasia. He has authored / co-authored several peer reviewed publications and text book chapters. He has also performed several live endoscopy demonstrations, endoscopy training in animal models and has lectured in national and international meetings. He was the recipient of the BSG Hopkins Endoscopy Prize 2010.

Research Interest

  BEST2 (Barrett's oesophagus Screening Trial), multicentre trial involving Cambridge (Dr R Fitzgerald), Nottingham (Dr K Ragunath), UCL London (Dr L Lovat) and Newcastle (Prof M Griffin). Trimodal Imaging (High resolution endoscopy, Autofluorescence and NBI) and molecular endpoints to detect dysplasia and early cancer in Barrett's oesophagus, collaborative work with Dr J Bergman, Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Dr R Fitzgerald, Hutchison MRC Research Centre, Addenbrooks Hospital, Cambridge, UK. EMR plus Radiofrequency ablation of dysplastic Barrett's oesophagus (Dr J Bergman). A European Multi-centre collaborative study involving centres in Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and UK. Procore study. Multicentre randomised trial comparing EUS guided FNA Vs FNABx. This study involves Nottingham, Cambridge, Birmingham and Newcastle. Sponsored by a research grant from Cook Medical. EG study: Case control study exploring the utility of EG scan in Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal varices. Study centres, Nottingham and Cambridge. Sponsored by a research grant from Intromedic Seoul, S Korea. Advanced endoscopic imaging in Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer: Collaboration with Dr R Fitzgerald, Hutchison MRC Research Centre, Addenbrooks Hospital, Cambridge, UK. Chemoprophylaxis, biomarkers and surveillance studies in Barrett's oesophagus (AsPECT, CHOPIN and BOSS trials), Prof Janusz Jankowski, Prof Hugh Barr and Dr John deCaestecker.
