She took time out of her training to undertake research at the University of Nottingham and was awarded a PhD in 2011 on the subject of 'Modern imaging techniques to study placentation'. She completed her post-graduate training in a sub-specialty training post in feto-maternal medicine at the Nottingham. Research Interest
Dr Nia Jones is part of two current research groups: Obstetric imaging group: this group is involved in developing imaging technologies and techniques to aid the management of women with pregnancy complications. Current work is focusing on fetal size and adiposity and improving detection rates for macrosomia, particularly in pregnancies complicated by diabetes. A second project is focusing on placental pathology including placental blood flow and morbid adherence of the placenta. Obstetric nutrition group: this group is examining the role of nutrition on pregnancy and labour focusing in particular on carbohydrate intake and examining whether carbohydrate supplementation will improve obstetric outcomes in a similar fashion to carbohydrate supplementation in surgery (Enhanced recovery after surgery [ERAS] programme).
