Biography

Sherif Awad is Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric & Laparoscopic Surgeon at Royal Derby Hospital, Derby; and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham. He read at University of St.Andrews/Manchester undergraduate course and qualified in 2001. He undertook his surgical training in Manchester, the East-Midlands and London. He is a specialist in laparoscopic (keyhole) abdominal surgery, undertaking procedures that include oesophageal and stomach cancer surgery, bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, anti-reflux and hiatal hernia surgery (for heartburn and acid-reflux), as well as keyhole gallbladder and hernia surgery. His specialist training included undertaking two advanced keyhole fellowships (Upper GI/Bariatric) where he gained significant experience in advanced keyhole techniques. Sherif has also completed a PhD (University of Nottingham) into the metabolic and cellular effects of preoperative carbohydrate drinks to research how to better prepare patients' metabolism for surgery. His research was awarded numerous international and national research prizes and medals (including the Moynihan Medal and Roesetrees Prize). He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 8 book chapters and delivered over 35 international presentations. He is an expert journal reviewer for numerous international surgical journals and is presently co-authoring international guidelines on enhanced recovery after bariatric surgery.

Research Interest

1) Investigating genetic and metabolic differences amongst responders and non-responders to bariatric/metabolic surgery 2) Establishment of a biobank for patients undergoing bariatric/metabolic surgery 3) Investigating genetic and proteomic responses to major abdominal surgery and the influence of these to physiological responses and surgical outcomes 4) Identification of patient-specific metabolic predictors of exaggerated inflammatory responses to major abdominal surgery 5) Development of assessment tools to chart surgical proficiency during advanced laparoscopic training
