Biography

As well as developing and running trials, Dr Whitehouse is active in other areas of clinical research. Recent projects have included trials of antiepileptic treatments, migraine treatments, sleep disorders treatments, the development of associated movements in normal children, the development of a new autonomic function assessment protocol for children, the follow-up of children with acute CNS inflammation, and a brain MRI study of children with Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T), using cutting edge techniques (CATNAP). He is also active in clinical audit and service evaluation, frequently working on projects with medical students, e.g. in their honours year or special study modules. He developed the role of patient and public involvement, in collaboration with the Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN) East (now the Children's Clinical Research Network), engaging patient groups and their families, and school children, in focus groups and questionnaires to inform all stages of study design. Projects in set-up in 2016 include a PhD study of the Natural History of A-T (N-HAT) funded by Action for A-T; and a clinical trial in patients with A-T (ATTeST) sponsored by EryDel. Dr Whitehouse is an enthusiastic collaborator and likes working in multidisciplinary teams.
