Biography

I joined the Department for Health at the University of Bath in 2014 as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Human Physiology. My research seeks to understand the interactions between nutrition and exercise in the context of health and disease. One strand of this work is to explore the role of carbohydrate availability in the regulation of energy balance, metabolic health and sports performance. A second strand aims to uncover new dietary approaches to influence the production of hormones from the gut, and thereby regulate appetite and energy expenditure. I have published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in journals such as Diabetes Care, Obesity Reviews, American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. I also have editorial roles with Nutrients, BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation and the International Rugby Board Science Network, and have acted as an expert panel member for the Research Council of Norway and a grant reviewer for Diabetes UK. Furthermore, I am the University of Bath ambassador for The Nutrition Society. After completing a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science and an MRes in Exercise Physiology, I completed my PhD in 2013, which covered the areas of human nutrition, exercise metabolism, and appetite. Following this, I completed a post-doc in collaboration with the University of Maastricht and Newcastle University studying the effects of nutrition on liver and muscle metabolism. In addition to academic work, I have also provided nutrition consultancy to triathletes, rowers, cyclists and rugby players.
