Biography
Philip Towle is a Visiting Professor at the University of Buckingham. He holds an MA in History from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from Kings College, London. From 1971 to 1974 he was a Senior Lecturer in History at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. Subsequently he was employed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and served on British delegations to the Conference of the Committee on Disarmament, the Seabed Treaty Review Conference and the first UN Special Session on Disarmament. He became a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian National University in 1978 before joining the Centre of International Studies in Cambridge in 1980. He was Deputy Director of the Centre from 1982 and subsequently Director until 1997. He was also Tutor for Graduates and College Lecturer in History at Queens’ College. He has been a visiting fellow at universities in Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, Republic of Korea, Japan and the USA.
Research Interest
His current research interests include post-war peace conferences and the effect of public opinion on security policy.
