Biography
I am an ecologist and conservation biologist and teach these specialisms at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I am Programme Leader for Zoology and supervise a range of PhD students. I am also the research lead for 'Eco-sustainability and evolution' in the University of Derby's 'Environmental Sustainability Research Centre'.
Research Interest
I am interested in using multidisciplinary approaches to research the ecology and conservation of species in cultural ecosystems; this has included the biodiversity and socioeconomic aspects of conservation in oil palm plantations in Malaysian Borneo and harvesting woodfuel on biodiversity in British Woodlands. I am also interested in conservation in freshwater systems - currently supervising two PhD students investigating ecosystem services provided by freshwater mussels and one on the detection of freshwater invasive species using eDNA techniques.
