Biography

Dr Hou received a BSc degree in 1988 from Central-South University of Technology in China, and an MSc degree in 2003 from Laser Research Institute, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, also in China. From 1992 to 2000, he worked in a major enterprise where he was appointed as Production Manager. In 2005, he received his Ph.D degree from the Institute of Semiconductors (IOS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), carrying out research in photonic integrated circuits using MOVPE selective-area-growth (SAG), butt-jointing, quantum-well-intermixing (QWI), and asymmetric twin-waveguide (ATG) techniques, and was the sole winner of the 2005 Baosteel Scholarship of IOS-CAS. He was also awarded the first prize award bestowed by the Science and Technology of Chinese Materials Research Society in 2006; the same year he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Bristol, UK, as a research associate, where he worked on the European Commission FP6-IST Project of multi–functional integrated arrays of interferometer switches. In 2007, he joined the School of Engineering, University of Glasgow (UOG), as a Research Associate, focusing on high frequency and high power semiconductor mode-locked lasers and integrated optoelectronics. In 2012, he was promoted to a Research Fellow. In 2016, he was appointed as a Lecturer. He has fabricated many novel integrated optics devices with world-class results, which led to him obtaining major international joint research grants and established partnerships with numerous companies, universities, and institutes around the world. He has published over 100 journal and conference papers on a range of optoelectronic devices and systems and currently holds a number of patents, has chaired sessions at numerous well-known international conferences, was invited to be a Visiting Professor at the institute of semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and he continues to review articles for several top-level journals.
