Biography

Professor Rhian Touyz, MBBCh, MSc(Med), PhD, is the Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences (ICAMS), University of Glasgow. She is the British Heart Foundation(BHF) Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and Director of the ICAMS BHF Award of Excellence. She was the Canada Research Chair in Hypertension and Professor of Medicine at the Kidney Research Centre, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI)/Univ of Ottawa. Prof Touyz received her BSc(Hons) (1980), MBBCh (1984), MSc (1986) and PhD (1992) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship (1992-1996) at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal. She has received numerous academic and research awards from the American Society of Hypertension, the Canadian Society of Hypertension, the Quebec Society of Hypertension, the American Physiological Society and the American Heart Association (AHA). In particular, she is the recipient of the Dahl Award of the AHA, the Distinguished Lecture Award, Mannitoba Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, and the Distinguished Service award from Hypertension Canada. She is the 2012 Robert M. Berne Distinguished Lecturer of the American Physiological Society. Prof Touyz co-chaired the Recommendations Task Force of the Canadian Hypertension Education Program (CHEP), responsible for annual clinical hypertension guidelines, she is on the Executive of the International Society of Hypertension and she is the past President of the Canadian Hypertension Society. She Chaired the grant review panel of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and is a member of the Microcirculation and Hypertension Study section of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. She is the immediate past Chair of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association. She is funded by grants from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the CIHR, the Kidney foundation of Canada/Pfizer, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the British Heart Foundation. She is the Editor-In-Chief of Clinical Science and Deputy Editor of Hypertension. She is the Associate Editor of Pharmacological Reviews. Prof Touyz has trained over 40 graduate and post-graduate students and has published over 290 original papers and many review articles. Her laboratory is very trainee-oriented. Her main focus of research relates to molecular, cellular and vascular mechanisms of hypertension. Prof Touyz is a clinician-scientist and her areas of research includes clinical and experimental hypertension, signal transduction, oxidative stress, ion transport, vascular biology, adipose tissue biology and diabetes. She has a particular interest in translational and clinical research.
