Biography
Gill joined the School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield in May 2015 and is currently Lecturer in Illustration BA(Hons). Originally studying at Leeds College of Art she went on to gain her first degree in Graphic Design specialising in Illustration at the University of Northumbria followed by MA Illustration at the Royal College of Art, London and went on to combine illustration, freelance practice and teaching gaining extensive academic and professional experience in her work to date. Gill is currently studying Illustration practice based PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University, School of Art. Award winning and with over 20 years experience Gill has produced work across a wide range of commissions from editorial, books and publishing to design, advertising and licensing. Professional employment includes many major clients and industry commissions ranging from 4AD records to The British Council, her work has featured in many magazines and newspapers ranging from Vogue to New Scientist. She has exhibited in the UK and abroad. Gill’s teaching experience ranges from Pre-Masters Art and Design for international students at the International Study Centre University of Huddersfield 2014 to Senior Lecturer in Illustration; she was formerly Subject Leader BA(Hons) Illustration at the University of Wolverhampton from 2000 to 2009. She has wide experience teaching illustration practice including image and text, narrative illustration, children’s book illustration, self initiated projects, professional practice and has contributed to the study of illustration as award winning lecturer, tutor and visiting lecturer at several colleges colleges and Universities in the UK.
Research Interest
Gill’s areas of illustration research interest and expertise include narrative illustration genres, and image making. Her further specialist knowledge relates to drawing practices, mixed media within illustration practice as well as teaching illustration in education practice. Her industry experience across a range of illustration fields supports current research interests including narrative imagery, response to fictional texts, reportage, the picture book. Currently represented by licensing agents in the UK and abroad.
