Bob graduated from the University of Leicester with a BSc in Biological Sciences in 1978. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College, London, in 1981 for his work on the molecular characterisation of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. He then moved to the Université de Nice, France, as an EMBO Fellow, to work on the molecular characterisation of a variety of cation channel proteins. He returned to the University of Leicester in 1983 and joined the staff as a temporary lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, before being appointed to a lectureship in Medical Biochemistry in the Department of Medicine in 1984. Bob was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1995. From 2007 to 2011 he was Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences.
