The metabolic basis of the catabolic state that occurs in patients with chronic renal failure, in particular the stimulation of protein catabolism and the impairment of protein synthesis that occurs in skeletal muscle cells in response to uraemic metabolic acidosis. The mechanism whereby low extracellular pH transduces signals into cultured skeletal muscle cells and the involvement of free amino acids and amino acid transport proteins in these signals.
