Dr Madeline Abbas

Biography

Dr Madeline-Sophie (Maddy) Abbas completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of Leeds on British Muslim identity formations, funded by a University Research Scholarship.  Key strands in her work are critical race and whiteness studies, Islamophobia and migration. She has also undertaken research with the racial justice organisation, JUST West Yorkshire, funded by a Higher Education Innovation Fund and the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and ESRC funded project based at the University of Cambridge exploring EU migrants’ experiences of working in the UK.  Publications include ‘“White Terror” in the “War on Terror”’ (2013) for a co-edited special issue journal in Critical Race and Whiteness Studies; co-edited book, The Big Society: The Big Divide? (Abbas and Lachman, 2012) and co-edited chapter (Gelsthorpe and Abbas, 2016) for The Routledge International Handbook of Criminology and Human Rights. She is currently a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Manchester.  Previous posts include Research Associate at Cambridge University for the Cambridge Migration Research Network (CAMMIGRES), Lecturer in Sociology at Oxford Brookes University, and Teaching Assistant at the University of Leeds. She is currently module convenor for Researching Culture and Society and Qualitative Research Design and Methods with undergraduate students and Research Design 2 with taught postgraduate students.
