Zoe Berman

Biography

Dr. Zoe Berman is currently working as a Architect and Design tutor in the Department of Architecture, University of Reading , United Kingdom. Zoë Berman is a qualified architect and design tutor. She is co-director of Studio Berman; an architecture practice that brings together design expertise on education, arts and residential projects. The practice supports clients to develop appropriate strategies and understand the visual, analytical and practical issues of a project. Through design we seek to develop proposals that are functional and enjoyable for clients and end users. Materials, making and craft is core to Zoë's design interests. A small, nimble practice, the studio seeks to further its research-based knowledge through writing, publications, teaching and lecturing. Zoë has taught in London and is a visiting critic to the University of Westminster, University of Sheffield and Kingston University. This year she led a design and making workshop for the Welsh School of Architecture that focused on the importance of learning through making and drawing by hand. Zoë curates a lecture programme at the Cass School of Architecture and enjoys instigating architectural events such as film night and book clubs as a means through which to connect with fellow practitioners and knowledge share. Previous experience includes positions with SCABAL Architects, BGS Architects and the multi-disciplinary practice Pentagram working on product, interiors, graphic design and art direction projects. Wanting to better understand the collaborative process between architect and engineer, Zoe spent a year with a structural team at Buro Happold engineers, working on a number of projects in the UK including the Norwich Cathedral Hostry by Hopkins Architects and 10 Trinity Square by Woods Bagot Architects.
